Paula Dean Rocks

I’m sure most of you have heard reporting on the recent controversy about Food Network Star Paula Dean.  If you haven’t she’s a celebrity cook that specializes in southern cooking.  Needless to say almost all of her recipes are packed with calories and plenty of fats and sugar.  The controversy started  when Paula released that she now has type 2 Diabetes and has not for the past three years.

The problem is she’s now working as a spokesperson for a drug company that sells the medication she’s taking.  So it looks bad to most and appears that she was hiding her condition while still recommending her food to others in the midst of her condition.  Some feel that she was less than forthcoming and is now cashing in on her illness.

Here’s my take on it.  So what!  Paula’s food is out of this world and every now and then when I have one of her dishes I know I’m paying for it on the treadmill later.  I think the problem is people are being overly judgmental about this.  Paula is a product of her environment and is dealing with her health issue based partially on diet and I’m sure some genetics.  However that’s her business.  I personally don’t care that she’s working for the drug company that supplies her medicine.  Professionally I think it’s a great move and that she uses this situation to educate her audience about diabetes and how to better prepare food for it while still enjoying southern cooking.
